Ive got a 1986 Evinrude 40HP Outboard. On the intermittent occasions I was actually able to finally get it started at the dock it would die after applied throttle continuously for approx 5.

Then it runs great and will stay running on carb cleaner. Already checked fuel pumps and rebuilt them. There must be a problem in between the fuel pumps and the carburetor.

If so it wont stay on if theres no signal that the motor has oil pressure as a safety issue. An oil pressure switch like an idiot light deal in a car allows the pump to run after you let go the starting action on the key.

Not uncommon to have to do them a time or two to get them clean enough. Assuming you set your needles after tear down. It is normal to sometimes have to push the key again during warm up but not right to have to keep doing it beyond one or two minutes.

This happens over and over again because many quick-disconnect fittings that attach the fuel line to the outboard are just plain cheap.
The same goes for the barbs that attach the fitting and the fuel line andor the hose clamps that secure them. A weak fuel pump is probably not your issue as the primer will push fuel past the pump. So if squeezing the primer doesnt keep the motor running you probably are getting enough fuel delivered to the carb.
If your oil is overfilled that could cause your issues. Possible Causes and Corrections. Attempting to start engine incorrectly.
Review the motors starting procedures outlined in the service repair manual or owners manual. Gasoline tank empty to little fuel incorrect fuel mixture or fuel contains contaminants. Inspect the fuel in tank.

I checked the gear case oil it looks brown and has a strong odor. Also pulled the lower unit and the impeller doesnt look to be in that bad shape. I get smoke coming from the propeller while.

Shut off starboard motor yesterday waiting my turn at ramp now wont start. Motor turns over does the initial fire-up for 3-4 seconds and then shuts down. PPT SW fuel pump ignition coil injector ECM and IAC.
Yesterday i was out fishing it started right up and ran at top speed for probably 10-15 minutes then it bogged down and although it was still running it acted as if it were running on one cylinder or a fuel problem. I shut it off pulled the plugs which looked fine and within 10-15 minutes of setting started it up and it ran perfect for about 5 minutes this time then did the same thing bog way. Most outboards will not crank if the boat is in gear.
If the engine wont crank but other lights and gauges work correctly check that the gear shift is in neutral. If the engine cranks slowly or doesnt crank at all its possible your battery may be dead or low. Use a voltmeter to check the condition of your battery.
