Generally if it is not a problem with lack of raw water flow or fresh water the heat exchanger will be the cause. Im thinking the the tube running up to the motor must be stopped up with pieces of impeller.
1 Check the Water Pump Impeller.
Outboard motor water pump not working. Here are top four things boat owners can do when they notice that water is not circulating through the outboard motor. 1 Check the Water Pump Impeller. The water pump impeller is the cause of most water circulation and overheating problems.
The impeller is essentially a small round disc with spinning blades used to move water through the circuit of the outboard motor. The most obvious way to tell if the outboard water pump is failing is to watch for the engine to overheat. However this problem can be caused by a number of issues which is why its vital to test for a bad outboard water pump.
How Do You Test an Outboard Water Pump. On many outboards you can simply put on the muffs and start the engine. There are three reasons your outboard motors impeller wont pump.
The first is that the water stream fitting – the outlet hole for an outboard motors cooling system – is clogged. Insects love to crawl up into it but once there they may become trapped and die. Once the cooling system is full of water with no outlet the impeller just agitates.
If it isnt plugged then the water pump is most likely shot and you shouldnt run it at all if this is the case you will want to have it fixed before you sell. When you had it in the water did you speed up from an idle at all sometimes when a pump is weak it wont pump at an idle but will if the motor is running a little faster if this is the case good news. You still have to replace the pump.
New Water Pump - Still not pumping water Well it sounds like youve checked most of the simple things. A couple of possibilities that come to mind are 1. The key for the impeller fell out or became displaced during install.
The metal tube that goes into the pump housing became displaced at the powerhead end. There is a blockage in the powerhead. We now know the water pump impeller has a SET bent vanes in it it NEEDS REPLACEMENT 2-3 years old.
The rubber hardens up and does not flex nor pump as well as a good or new one will. It Will make a difference and very likely is your issue. Also inspect the housing for any distortion confirm all seals are there.
If the unit over heated at any time its time to remove the lowerunit and inspect the water pump first. Also while the unit is off we can push a rubber hose attach to the garden hose over the tube leading up to the powerhead and turn the water on Engine does not. Turn the water on and start the engine.
If the engine cools and water comes from the tell tale then the pump is the issue. Remove the pump cover check that the key XXXXX for the impeller is in place. Check that all the gaskets XXXXX 22 are in place.
Then lastly check the pump base XXXXX below the pump plate. If this housing is melted the pump will not pump water. The water pump impeller of any outboard motor needs to be serviced on a regular basis a task that if overlooked can lead to big trouble.
Most outboard maintenance schedules call for inspection of the impeller every 100 hours or once a year. How To Replace A Tohatsu - Nissan Outboard Water Pump - Impeller - YouTube. With only a very few exceptions such as Hondas 23hp model outboard engines are water-cooled.
An impeller pump at the bottom of the leg above the gearbox pumps water up to the motor which then travels back down the leg and exits under water. A tell tale hole under the motor itself or in the leg shows whether water is flowing as it should. Often the only sign of a problem is when the water from this tell tale stops flowing its important to monitor it all the time the engine.
05-28-2014 0721 AM. The main use for muffs is to allow you to start the motor without being in the water. Without the motor running the water pump will block flow.
There really isnt any need to flush an outboard that was used in fresh water. In salt water it should be flushed after every use. Johnson 15 HP Outboard Water Pump Replacement - YouTube.
There is no water flow coming out of the engine when I start it. I have replaced the water pump and impeller. I have checked the thermostat and it opens in hot water.
I have removed the tubing from the block to the cover and still no indication of water flow. When I run the motor there does not appear to be any water in the housing for the thermostat. All of my engines get warm but you can leave your hand on them and all of my Mercs.
And so should yours. Do not run the boat for more than a couple of minutes without seeing the peehole. Your pump may be working correctly but we need to see it coming out of the pee hole to know that it is pumping and that it is geting enough pressure.
DF175 No water from Pee Hole. I have a 2007 DF175 with less than 25 hours. I replaced the impellerwater pump with OEM parts.
Also performed a 100 hour service and replaced a few other parts just for the heck of it. I tried to run the motor with ear muffs but water will NOT flush through the pee hole. 09-02-2015 0951 AM.
My 1999 Yamaha outboard 90 HP four stroke had the water pump impeller destroyed by something the other week. Ive replaced the impeller and the lower unit will pump water sitting on the bench but I cant get the motor to pee. Im thinking the the tube running up to the motor must be stopped up with pieces of impeller.
My solution was to run a garden hose directly to the flush hose fitting turn the water on and start the motor. Cover the tell-tale hole with your finger so that you divert all the water into the powerhead. Let it run for a few minutes shut it off and reconnect the hose to the muffs.
BINGO – it now is pumping water. Just joined the forum and am looking for some advice on a brand new Suzuki DF20A outboard. Today I started my new outboard for the first time to find that no water was coming out of the tell-tale pee hole.
I read on a forum that it the engine might need to warm up before water would come out so i ran it for 5 minutes on idle. The most common cause of outboard motor overheating is water pump failure. Water pump failure can also be caused by a defective heat exchanger though this is harder to check.
