The clicking sound that you hearfeel in the remotes can actually be the cable slipped and wont make the reach to fully engage reverse and is just riding close enough to it there is a slight clicking of gears that you are feeling all the way to the remotes via the cable. Have a 50HP Johnson outboard that is not engaging fully in reverse. Not sure if its a linkage problemit will eventually go in reverse at slower rpms but skips out as throttle up.

Not running Mike You put it in forward gear before you start the engine tilt the motor into position then return to neutral to start. This allows the reverse lock to engage properly. BTW I had a problem engaging reverse recently.
You could try to pull the hitch pin up top under the engine cover and then remove the shift selector control cable. Then try to move it forwardreverse by hand. You will know right away if the linkage is connected or not.

Pull the cablesheath back to the motor thru the gunwale you must pull it thru the motor back of the carb to get the whole thing out. It hangs up in the too small space. You cant pull the cablesheath that you have just unhooked from the motor end as there is an adjustment wheel attached to that end.
