The first is that the water stream fitting – the outlet hole for an outboard motors cooling system – is clogged. Outboard water pump impellers cant take abuse so annual water pump maintenance is cheap insurance.
The pictures below make it easy to see how an outboard motor water pump works.
Outboard motor not pumping water. Here are top four things boat owners can do when they notice that water is not circulating through the outboard motor. 1 Check the Water Pump Impeller. The water pump impeller is the cause of most water circulation and overheating problems.
The impeller is essentially a small round disc with spinning blades used to move water through the circuit of the outboard motor. There are three reasons your outboard motors impeller wont pump. The first is that the water stream fitting – the outlet hole for an outboard motors cooling system – is clogged.
Insects love to crawl up into it but once there they may become trapped and die. Once the cooling system is full of water. After turning on the tap and starting the motor water spits out within 5 seconds.
Another thing is not sure about your motor but with mine if the motor heats up if the impeller wasnt working for example it automatically shuts off. Try limbering up the muffs and blasting on the tap. I have seen a lot of times where they dont work too well.
Try putting the lower unit in a garbage can filled with water. Give the motor a few minutes to warm up. Likely your T-Stat did not open up to let water pass through to the pee hole.
If all that fails. The rubber impeller spinning inside the stainless steel and plastic housing will overheat and begin to melt in short order if do not maintain the water flow to the impeller. Most likely given the history of the engine we have an issue with the rubber water pump impeller.
We should remove it and inspect for damage. You just have to take out the rubber bung at the leg bottom and the clamp screw for the gear lever is there 10mm head. Loosen that but not completely and when you undo two bolts under the cav plate the leg can be lowered and the water pump is visible.
New Water Pump - Still not pumping water Well it sounds like youve checked most of the simple things. A couple of possibilities that come to mind are 1. The key for the impeller fell out or became displaced during install.
The metal tube that goes into the pump housing became displaced at the powerhead end. There is a blockage in the powerhead. DO NOT run that motor with the hose connector on the side of the engine.
Its not designed to supply adequate water to the pump when running. Its strictly for non running flushing. Can destroy water pumps in a very short time.
Could be a powerhead gasket failure or a pump failure or a head gasket failure. Now ya just gotta go find it. Turn the water on and start the engine.
If the engine cools and water comes from the tell tale then the pump is the issue. Remove the pump cover check that the key XXXXX for the impeller is in place. Check that all the gaskets XXXXX 22 are in place.
Then lastly check the pump base XXXXX below the pump plate. If this housing is melted the pump will not pump water. The outboard can stop pumping water out the tell-tale begin to overheat restrict the available RPM allowed and cause significant damage if not corrected.
Thankfully you can service the water pump to ensure it runs smoothly. I have a 1999 90 hp 2 stroke Yamaha outboard engine that has always ran great. I put it in the water last weak and while it was sitting idling in the water the overheat alarm went off.
I shut the engine down let it cool checked the water intake ports in the lower unit and everything looked good. I fired it up and the alarm stayed off. Did the engine seem hot.
If not it could simply be a blockage bit of sand or weed stuck in the pilot tube - have you tried getting a length of heavy nylon fishing line 100lb or more or weed trimmer line and poke it up the pilot hole while the engine is running in the water. Give it a shove around to try to dislodge the blockage. 09-02-2015 0951 AM.
My 1999 Yamaha outboard 90 HP four stroke had the water pump impeller destroyed by something the other week. Ive replaced the impeller and the lower unit will pump water sitting on the bench but I cant get the motor to pee. Im thinking the the tube running up to the motor must be stopped up with pieces of impeller.
If its still pumping water you should be fine with just replacing the impeller. If you have any questions about it you have to take the water pump apart to change the impeller so it might just be worth throwing in a whole new assembly. Its not all that hard to do just take your time and dont force anything.
You should replace the gear oil as well. Its good outboard maintenance pr. When dealing with an outboard motor you need to take care of your water pump.
Make sure you check your boats water pump every year to ensure it is in good working condition. A faulty water pump might send you to a mechanic shop frequently. Water Pump Anatomy 101.
The pictures below make it easy to see how an outboard motor water pump works. While these pictures are from my outboard motor to my knowledge most other makes have a very similar design so they should apply to your outboard too. The first picture is of whats called the outer plate.
Its the bottom or base of the. 115 HP 4 stroke water pump issue. I have replaced the water pump impeller on a 2007 115HP 4 stroke Mercury outboard.
When the motor runs it does not seem to pump water. I have taken it apart a few times but see no problem. I have followed the shop manual and replaced the impeller and gaskets.
Suzuki DF115A Motor not peeing. Motor is not peeing and I followed hose up to the motor. I removed the hose and ran a weed eater line into fittin about 3 feet.
I hooked hose back up and started motor It started peeing like the 1st day i ran it. I cut it off got a large trash can filling it up with water and 13 of gallon. Outboard water pump impellers cant take abuse so annual water pump maintenance is cheap insurance.
The water pump impeller of any outboard motor needs to be serviced on a regular basis a task that if overlooked can lead to big trouble. Most outboard maintenance schedules call for inspection of the impeller every 100 hours or once a year. The most common cause of outboard motor overheating is water pump failure.
Lack of raw water flow and lack of fresh water can cause water pump failure. Lack of fresh water can be noted if there is a large increase in temperature between the inlet and and outlet of the heat exchanger. Subsequently question is is the water coming out my outboard supposed to be hot.
