Step 2 Lift the back edge of the motor cover and while doing so unhook the front of the cover from the hook holding it in place. Step 3 Lift the cover off of the engine. Place blocks under the LU to prevent an uncontrolled slide to the floor.
Slide the LU down off its locating pins. Lightly tap on the LU and the motor leg with the soft hammer to overcome any drag from corrosion. Heat may be used to separate especially stubborn joints.
Use a torch to heat the LU near the joint. Remove the oil drain screw or bolt and its washer or O-ring with a wrench or flathead screwdriver. The drain screwbolt is usually located on the side of the outboard just above the lower unit.
Inspect the drain screw or bolts washer.
