How to start a boat motor that has been sitting. Here is my usual recipe for starting my 1970s 4cyl gasoline engine when its been sitting over the winter. Remove the spark plugs and run the starter for a bit to air out the cylinders and run the lift pump to get fuel in the carburettor. Put the plugs back in set the choke and try and start the engine for about five minutes.

These are the basic checks that should be performed if you are planning on taking a boat out of long term storage. Or are reviving an engine that has been sitting. If the engine has been sitting for years any gas in the tank or fuel lines is likely bad or contaminated.
You will want to disconnect the main fuel line from the carburetor to avoid pumping bad gas through the fuel system. You can run carbureted engines briefly using a water bottle with holes poked in the cap to manually supply the carburetor. Some people will spin the drill some turn the engine over 90 degrees by hand spin some more turn the engine again spin turn etc.

Youre not trying to start it yet. Dont use starter fluid or pour gas down the carb. Thats very hard on engines and can tear the motor.
If it has a carburator I would unscrew the bottom and drain out all the old gas thats been sitting in the bowl for 2 years. Is it worth a big overhaul. It is ideal to remove the drive and check the engine alignment after sitting for so long. Bad mounts can ruin the engine drive coupler.
