Flush outboard motor with vinegar. The product is called Salt-Away and it is an inhibited acid that can be circulated through the motor to remove salt deposits. Of course vinegar is an acid and may work also. If I were doing this myself I would run my motor in a 55 gallon plastic drum and add my acidic product with the motor running until I saw some foam or signs of deposit removal then flush with fresh water and a mild base to neutralize.
I put 5 gal. Of vinegar in a 30 gal tub and ran my engine in that for 15 minutes or until it got hot. I was amazed and the grit that came out From now on I will use a hose end sprayer with vinegar and a little Blue Coral to make it stick.

The benefit is it leaves a protective coating inside the engine. Vinegar should be fine for flushing. I have been using Salt Eliminator to wash down the boat and external motor.
It has an attachment that mixes the SE. With water to form a spray. I intend to use the attachment fill it full of vinegar then run it through the fresh water flush near middle of the motor then put the attachment inline with my motor muffs then run the motor with the water turned on full force.

Then you will need to let the vinegar sit in the engine for a few hours and then rinse. I think you could easily put a hundred percent vinegar on a head like this but it would be very difficult to flush a motor with that kind of concentration.
You just couldnt get enough of it. So Im just going to tip the hole liter in so were going to have 1 to 20 for the acid and Im going to have 1 to 10 for vinegar. Salt away is just white vinegar acetic acid with a touch of detergent.
Rather than buy the expensive stuff make your own. I run a solution of it through my engine each salt water trip and also use it to wash salt off my fishing gear the boat etc. As mentioned a fresh water rinse after using the vinegar flush is wise.
Came out easy. I also tied a big white 5-gallon bucket under the exhaust pipe so I would not forget and flush that vinegar-dirt into the sea. Next morning out comes a bucket of crud-vinegar followed by my normal cooling sea water.

If your outboard has a flush hose fitting you can rig up your own flushing system just need a pump and a container. The stuff is safe to handle with bare skin and is biodegradable and safe to flush down the drain. Theres another similar flushing liquid but no can remember the name and have no personal experience with it.

Rusty water from an outboard would be very unusual. Must be from an inboard or sterndrive which are usually adapted auto engines. Still a good idea to flush after every use in salt brackish or oil laden water.
Yes dishwashing liquid is OK. Check out the link below to confirm. Gazza yeah I agree with you I dont think vinegar would cut it for cleaning up a submerged motor maybe go for the hydrochloric acid but neutralise it before its starts to etch the alloy.
For flushing though vinegar works quite well. The heat generated by the outboard and the vinegar cleans the cooling system quite well and its cheap. First get a large heavy duty bin or drum and fill it about 23 full with water and added 4 gallons of vinegar. Like in the below video but just use vinegar to flush it. Well worth trying to clean the block water channels in the way you suggest but acetic acid is pretty weak acid so vinegar is going to much slower than sulphamic acid and slower even than lactic acid.
Vinegar is only about 5 acetic acid so fairly dilute as well. If the engine is heavily scaled you might have to repeat the process. May 31 2010.
Using dovedawn soap to flush out your outboard. Used to do it all of the time when flushing the salt out. Warm up motor on muffs.
Turn off the water and squirt some detergent down in the hose. Crank up motor and turn on water. Run until suds go away.
I always flush my inboardoutboard after running in salt water with vinegar through a hose attachment like the one that comes with the Salt Away for a few minutes and then flush with the same attachment filled with Dawn dish soap to nuetralize the acid in the vinegar. Fill 13 vinegar 23 inexpensive car washwash I use Blue Coral and set the sprayer to get a little suds going as you apply. It makes cleaning the boat much easier and removes most salt without having to scrub.
If you can use hot water which disolves. Flushing a cup of white vinegar each week is a popular scale preventative treatment for the head. Its allowed to soak in the plumbing for 30 minutes or so before flushing through in hope that build-up will be prevented.

Very expensive but it did help one of our older engines right away. We also rinse all our gear and the boat while in the water with it every so often. Put 40-60mls of Salt-Away concentrate into mixer cup for under 90hp motors or for 90-300hp use 80-100mls to flush your engine wash boat trailer and fishing gear.
