My 1975 Merc I simply ran it in fresh waterdisconnected the fuel line at the tank and let it run out.
Do you need to put antifreeze in an outboard motor. Most outboard motors are cooled by a continuous flow of the water they are running in. You cannot add antifreeze to this. If the motor will be exposed to freezing conditions you need to lift it out of the water and let all the water run out of it.
See the instruction book. Do you need antifreeze in an outboard. Keep the motor in the full down position and all the water will drain out.
Keep it that way all winter so water does. I have put antifreeze in an inboard but on an outboard if you check your lower unit for any water and make sure it drains out when you flushclean the other part I cant imagine needing antifreeze. Similarly one may ask do you need to put antifreeze in an outboard motor.
Keep the motor in the full down position and all the water will drain out. Keep it that way all winter so water does. Not get in behind the prop and freeze.
Will an outboard motor freeze. Do you need antifreeze to winterize an outboard. Unlike the big auxiliary engine in a boat the raw water jackets on an outboard will drain with the engine in an upright position.
If youve flushed your engine of salt water the fresh water will drain out if you leave the engine upright on a sawhorse or a stand. Some experts recommend that you use antifreeze instead of water. If you choose to do that make sure youre using an antifreeze made special for marine applications.
The antifreeze will not freeze up inside the motor over the winter. Protect the internal parts of the outboard motor when you. Do you need antifreeze in an outboard.

My 1975 Merc I simply ran it in fresh waterdisconnected the fuel line at the tank and let it run out. Then I removed the sparkplugs and poured in Mystery oilReplace the lower gear oil and then in the spring a new set of sparkplugs. Dont put antifreeze in an outboard.
It will just drain out. I tip my engines all the way down for a while then tip them all the way up for about fifteen minutes then tip them all the way down. I take out batteries and store in garage on a maintainer.
With the winter months approaching fast Im getting mixed information on what the best or required method is for winterizing an inboardoutboard. You can get the winterization kits and expensive rv antifreeze and run that thru the block via muffs or just drain the block push all remaining water out with compressed air and remove the impeller housing hoses. To prevent freeze damage prior to winter storage many owners simply drain the cooling water out of their outboards.
However while it might seem like overkill we recommend flushing your motor with antifreeze. This will prevent residual water from turning into ice and causing damage during a hard freeze. DO YOU NEED TO PUT ANTIFREEZE IN AN OUTBOARD MOTOR.
As weve shown above its best to use anti freeze or some other sort of preventative measures to stop issues arising with your boat engine during colder climates. However as a word of caution only use products approved to do the job and dont second guess this. Drain the motor by leaving it vertical overnight.
I have also seen marine antifreeze freeze solid. Pull the plugs spray a little fogging oil in the cylinders replace with new high-quality plugs thatll cost you 10-20year. Once the plugs are back in turn the motor over for a second to distribute the fogger.

August 23 2016 at 742 am 1635400. Outboards are self draining so as long as the motor is down it will drain. Start and shut it off a couple of times and you will be fine.
Check the lower unit before freezing temperatures arrives a d if it is good you should be good to go. If yours is an outboard motor flush it out with fresh water then connect an antifreeze kit to its water intake. Just remove the hose after the water flush while the engine is still running and attach a hose that runs to your antifreeze container.
Keep the engine running until your antifreeze tank is dry. Do you need to put antifreeze in an outboard motor. To prevent freeze damage prior to winter storage many owners simply drain the cooling water out of their outboards.

However while it might seem like overkill we recommend flushing your motor with antifreeze. To winterize the engine with antifreeze youll need a five-gallon bucket and enough antifreeze for your engine and related plumbing at least two gallons. Will an outboard motor freeze.
When the air temperature is below freezing always keep the motor in. But even winterizing your engines should be done with non-toxic antifreeze since most of it will be ejected into the water the first time you start the engine for the season. Use no toxic antifreezes which might end up in the water.
You will still need the hose or lake to cool the engine and you still need stabilized fuel. Use the Fast Idle lever to set the motor then start it and the LEDs on the display will come on and. It is important to get that treated fuel into the entire fuel system by running the boat for about 10 minutes either in the water or while connected to a garden hose follow owners manual instructions if using a hose.
Finally replace the fuel filter.
